The rupee  is the currency of Sri Lanka, divided into 100 cents. It is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and is generally written “Rs”.

Coins come in denominations of one, two, five and 10 rupees. Notes come in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 rupees.

In addition you can exchange your currency at any bank in Sri Lanka, or even at your hotel. Also there are authorized “Money Exchanges”in every main city in the country.

All internationally accepted bank debit and credit cards could be used at ATM machines located in all strategic locations throughout the country.

It is advisable to get the slip that shows you have changed money officially, This will help you, if you decide to changing Rupees to back to a foreign currency at the airport , at the time you are leaving Sri Lanka.
